| The Nashville Philatelic Society (NPS) was founded in April 1886 to promote fraternity among the stamp collectors of Nashville and the surrounding area. It's Secretary at the time was J. M. Gray, a Nashville, Tennessee "dealer in U. S. and Foreign Postage Stamps and U. S. Revenue Stamps." NPS was a chapter of the American Philatelic Society, then known as the American Philatelic Association, which was also founded in 1886. Early on, NPS began its long tradition of regular philatelic auctions which continue to the present day. "After about two years, attendance and interest in the club seems to have lapsed and the Society as an organized group ceased existence." In December 1928, a group of collectors reformed the NPS and renewed it's chapter affiliation with the American Philatelic Society. Except for the years of World War II, the legacy of NPS continues from 1928 to the present day. Meetings were first held in member's homes but soon were held in more public spaces such as the Y.M.C.A., War Memorial Building, the Noel Hotel, the Nashville Gas Company, Taystee Bakery, the Andrew Jackson Hotel and various libraries in the area. Currently, meetings are held bimonthly on the second and fourth Mondays at the Bavarian Bierhaus in the Opry Mills Mall. NPS has hosted an annual stamp show for many years at many different locations in the Nashville area. |
